University Profile
A 19-place rise in our league table has followed Middlesex University’s best results in the National Student Survey (NSS) this summer.

Our analysis of the annual review of student satisfaction takes account of student responses on everything from teaching quality and academic feedback to learning resources and personal development. In jumping two percentage points this year to a student satisfaction score of 81.7%, Middlesex appears to be reaping a dividend from its decade-long process of campus reorganisation.

Seven campuses spread around north London have become one based in Hendon, providing the university with a clear identity and a greater sense of common purpose.

The university has invested more than £200m bringing about the transformation and attracting 150 new academics. The last phase of the programme saw nursing and the other health subjects move to Hendon, where The Grove, the £80m centre for art, design and media, has won a string of accolades.

It includes Sony-designed, equipped and built TV studios and newsroom, and flexible performance and exhibition spaces centred around an atrium. Earlier developments at Hendon saw the construction of

a new library and the roofing over of the main quadrangle to provide social space.

This was followed by a new building for science subjects and the opening of the Forum for student services and leisure facilities. The campus, which also houses the large business school, even boasts one of the country’s few Real Tennis courts.

ICT facilities have been updated with wireless access available throughout the campus. Another dividend from the campus reorganisation is seen in the university reporting higher spending – this year standing at just under £2,600 per head – on student facilities than any institution outside Oxbridge and Imperial College London. This is fully £1,000 per student more than most of its peers.

While the university has been concentrating its activities in London, it has been spreading its wings abroad. Having opened campuses in Mauritius and Dubai, it added another in Malta in 2013 after six years of offering business and computing degrees through one of the island’s colleges.

Middlesex is the first overseas university on the island, where it expects to attract students from North Africa and the Middle East, as well as from Malta itself. More than 10,000 students now take the university’s degrees outside the UK, while almost a fifth of the undergraduates studying in London also come from other countries. They include more than 1,000 from other parts of the EU, the legacy of a longstanding commitment to Europe.

Middlesex has 42,000 students worldwide, making it one of the UK’s largest universities. There was a 9% decline in applications in 2013, but the university compensated to some extent for a big drop in enrolments when £9,000 fees were introduced by taking an additional 300 undergraduates.

A new pattern of courses that accompanied the university’s physical reorganisation was proving popular before the fees went up. Middlesex also rationalised its schools to focus on its strengths in business, computing and the arts, registering particular successes with work-based courses, which drew praise from quality assessors.

The highly flexible course system allows students to start some courses in January if they prefer not to wait until autumn, and offers the option of an extra five-week session in the summer to try out new subjects or add to their credits.

The introduction of year-long modules had the benefit of instilling a deeper level of learning, allowing students to get to grips with a subject before assessment. Nine out of ten students take vocational courses.

Media students, for example, benefit from a Skillset Academy. The business school is the biggest subject area, but almost half of the undergraduates are on multidisciplinary programmes.

Almost a third of the full-time undergraduates are 21 or more on entry and nearly nine out of 10 of those from the UK come from the London area. The university has a longstanding focus on Europe and has almost 1,000 undergraduates from other EU countries. Across all campuses, more than a quarter of Middlesex’s students are from outside the UK.

Almost all of the British students are from state schools, more than half of them from working-class homes. Having increased its spending on bursaries in 2014, Middlesex will be one of seven universities not offering any in 2015, believing that outreach activities are a more effective means of broadening the intake.

The projected dropout rate has improved considerably in recent years and, at less than 16.6%, is close to the 15.2% national average for the university’s subjects and entry qualifications.

There are about 1,000 residential places, with more to come in the next few years. Priority in their allocation is given to international students and other first years who live outside London.

Sports facilities have been improving and now include a well-equipped “fitness pod” at Hendon with a gym and multipurpose outdoor courts.
