University Profile
Business and industry are closely involved in the development of courses at Sheffield Hallam and more than half of the undergraduates take work placements. The university claims to have the largest number of students at any university taking courses that include work placements of a year and it offers a full fee waiver for that year out.

More than 200 specialist flexible courses mix part-time study, distance learning and work-based learning. A “virtual campus” enables all students to access the growing volume of online teaching, assignments and discussion groups even when they are at home or on work placements.

Hallam is also the only university to offer a new MEng food engineering degree, having been chosen by the Food and Drink Federation to develop the course to address the shortage of skilled workers in the industry. The first students enrol this month.

A 15-place rise in our new league table places the university among the vanguard of the post-1992 universities in our rankings, a sharp rise in student satisfaction – now on a par with the neighbouring University of Sheffield – being instrumental in the

improvement.

Entrants to Sheffield Hallam in 2015 will benefit from impressive new buildings on each of the main campuses, as the university nears the end of its £110m development plan.

The focus of current activity is a new teaching and learning centre under construction on the Collegiate campus, in a leafy inner suburb of Sheffield, and a £30m building on the city centre campus. This will be home to the university’s new Sheffield Institute of Education, which brings teacher and workforce education provision together with two research centres.

The two projects are the latest in a 10-year programme of investment in buildings and staff. A new social centre has already opened on the Collegiate Campus and a £14m development allowed the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing to almost double in size, as extra provision was made for nursing, radiotherapy, physiotherapy and social work.

The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science, with its research facility, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, with more than 2,000 students. The faculty is the biggest provider of health and social care training in the UK and offers the widest range of sports courses.

Previous developments focused mainly on the City Campus, near the railway station and Sheffield’s central shopping area. The main learning centre was refurbished and all the departments in the arts, computing, engineering and sciences were brought together for the first time, placing them in the heart of Sheffield’s cultural industries quarter.

The university had already launched the Sheffield Business School in 2009, bringing together business, finance, management and languages, with the university’s specialisms of facilities management, food and nutrition, tourism, hospitality and events management. Business and management courses, which account for easily the biggest share of places, have their own city-centre headquarters, as does the students’ union, which took over the spectacular but ill-fated National Centre for Popular Music.

Even after a 13% fall in the demand for places spread over 2012 and 2013, Hallam is still among the top eight universities in the UK in terms of the volume of applications with just under 40,000 applications. The university actually enrolled an additional 250 undergraduates, although this was still 1,000 less than the record total in the year before £9,000 fees were introduced.

The university currently exceeds all of its access benchmarks and the projected dropout rate of less than 10% is lower than average for its courses and entry qualifications. The university has a growing international dimension, with large cohorts taught in partner institutions in Malaysia and other Asian countries. The 2,200 who come to Sheffield from outside the EU have given Hallam high marks in the International Student Barometer.

The university traces its origins in art and design back to the 1840s and celebrated the centenary of education and teacher training in 2005. It now has 35,000 students, including high proportions of part-time and mature students, and more than 1,000 taught on franchised courses in further education colleges.

Unlike many big post-1992 universities, Hallam now guarantees accommodation for first years, although the large local intake means that many live at home. Transport in the city is excellent, with both well-run bus and tram services.

Sports facilities are supplemented by those provided by the city for the World Student Games. The impressive swimming complex, for example, is on the university’s doorstep. The university has taken over the management of Sheffield’s only athletics stadium. The redeveloped facility will be available to community groups, schools and local clubs, as well as students.

The university partnered with the Tour de France to offer volunteering opportunities for students when the 2014 race started in Yorkshire, continuing the tradition of working with major sporting event organisers. Hundreds of students took official roles at the 2012 London Olympics and at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
