University Profile
Winchester has increased the size of its undergraduate intake for three years in a row and has seen further growth in applications in 2014. The numbers recruited from outside the UK have trebled since 2010 and the university is now among the leading group of post-1992 universities in our league table, with consistently good student satisfaction scores which see it rank just outside the top 30 in the UK this year – Winchester’s highest ranking among our eight league table measures.
The university traces its history as an Anglican foundation back to 1840 and has occupied its King Alfred campus since 1862. The compact site is on a wooded hillside overlooking the cathedral city, a ten-minute walk away, with views of the surrounding countryside.
Known as King Alfred’s College until 2004, the university is still best-known for teacher training, although this activity now accounts for only 12% of the places. Ofsted rates the teacher training courses as outstanding. It is one of the largest providers of primary school training in England, but courses on the main campus also span business, arts, humanities, health and social care, and social sciences. Degrees
Winchester improved on already respectable grades in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, when more than a third of the university’s work reached the top two categories, and there was some world-leading research in four of the six subject areas.
The university is one the few to have appointed its own ombudsman to handle complaints. It is involved in a national initiative to promote social entrepreneurship and offers support to graduates who wish to start their own businesses. Winchester students can also take advantage of exchange schemes with American universities in New York, Maine, Oregon and Wisconsin, as well as with universities in Japan.
Almost a third of the British students are from working-class homes and 97% are state educated. Winchester is particularly proud of its low dropout rate, which improved again in the latest projections, remaining below 10% and lower than the national average for Winchester’s courses and entry qualifications.
The main campus is well equipped, with its theatrical performance spaces, sports hall and fitness suite now supplemented by the £3.5m Winchester Sports Stadium. Open to local people as well as students, the stadium has an Olympic standard 400-metre eight-lane athletics track with supporting facilities for field events and also a floodlit all-weather pitch.
There are six performing arts studios in a new building that opened in 2010 on the King Alfred campus, offering the latest technology for student productions.
A new Learning and Teaching Building on the King Alfred campus has significantly improved the facilities for lectures and independent study. The low-energy building has a number of eco-friendly features which helped win an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2013.Winchester is among the top 40 universities for environmental performance, as measured in the People and Planet green league.
The award-winning University Centre transformed the students’ union, adding a nightclub, cinema, catering facilities, a bookshop and a supermarket at a cost of £9m. A “learning cafe” creates an informal working space with networked PCs and wireless internet access. An award-winning extension to the library made room for 200,000 books, 450 study spaces and 150 computers.
Building on the success of the Learning Café, the university has developed a second social learning space, with PC access, a café, informal seating areas and outside terracing. A £12m student village, a short walk from the main campus, provides more than 700 residential places. The business school is also located on the West Downs campus. A second village, with en-suite rooms arranged in cluster flats, opened in 2010, and a third village has added another 350 en suite study bedrooms.
The latest development includes a large gym, available to members of the community as well as students and staff. The new gym is part of a major investment by the university to enhance its sports facilities. Winchester guarantees campus accommodation to first year full-time undergraduates, overseas students and students with medical needs as long they apply by the deadline.
Students value the close-knit atmosphere and find the city is livelier than its staid image might suggest, with a number of bars catering to their tastes. Southampton is not far for those who hanker after the attractions of a bigger city, and London is only an hour away by train.
