University Profile
The demand for places at Worcester has doubled in seven years, as a series of impressive developments have come on stream. A second campus in the heart of the city opened in 2010 and a spectacular library and history centre – the first joint public and university library in Britain – was opened by the Queen two years ago.

The facility has won 47 national and international awards, including Best Civic Building, Best University Contribution to the Community and Best University Library Team.

In 2013 the university opened a 2,000-seatindoor sporting arena, which was one of only two specialist sports venues in the UK designed specifically for wheelchair athletes as well as the able-bodied. It has already hosted the first ever British Universities and Colleges Wheelchair Basketball championship as well as a host of top-flight and student netball, basketball and international wheelchair sports events.

Sport, education and business courses have been particularly popular as applications have risen, and there have been increases, too, in biochemistry, journalism, illustration, nursing and several other health subjects.

The university has three campuses less than

a mile from each other and all close to the city centre. A fourth campus - a science, health and enterprise park - is currently under development, and will provide new business links and work placement opportunities for students.

The main St John’s campus occupies a parkland site 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre. It includes science facilities; the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit; the digital arts centre and drama studio, and a modern all-weather pitch.

The City Campus occupies the historic buildings of the former Worcester Royal Infirmary. It includes teaching, residential and conference facilities and is the site of Worcester Business School.

The Hive, neighbouring the City Campus houses the new library and history centre, which brings together many services from Worcestershire County Council, including archaeology and history, with those of the university.

The Riverside campus, mostly for performance sport, includes the University of Worcester Arena. A mobile 3D motion analysis laboratory has been used by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Sports scholarships are offered in partnership with Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Worcester Wolves Basketball Club and Worcester Hockey Club.

The university’s commitment to disability sports extends to the UK’s first Disability Sport degree.

First as a post-war emergency teacher training college and later as a university college, the institution has always been the only provider of higher education in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The university remains strong in education and also in nursing and midwifery. Ofsted rated the primary and secondary teacher training “outstanding” for the second time in succession in 2014, and Worcester received the best possible inspection report from the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Worcester is the partner university for the National Childbirth Trust, delivering all of the trust’s antenatal training.

The six academic departments also cover applied sciences, geography and archaeology, a business school and arts, humanities and social sciences. An emphasis on employability in the curriculum was commended in an audit by the Quality Assurance Agency.

The 23 academics entered for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) represented the smallest contingent from any university in England, but Worcester has entered four times as many academics for the successor to the RAE, the Research Excellence Framework, which will be published at the end of 2014.

Only English had any world-leading research in 2008, although there are pockets of excellence such as the Association for Dementia Studies and the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, which produces all of Britain’s pollen forecasts.

More than a third of the undergraduates come from working-class homes. Standing at just over 10%, the projected dropout rate is better than average for Worcester’s subjects and entry standards.

The share of degree places going to students from working class backgrounds is a little lower than average for Worcester’s courses and entry qualifications, but the university has long-established projects working with primary schools to try to broaden the intake further.

There are excellent links with local businesses and students have access to an extensive learn-while-you-earn programme. A number of local partner colleges offer Worcester courses, as well as less conventional study centres such as hospices and specialist national organisations.

The cathedral city is not large, but is safer than many university locations, and has its share of pubs and clubs that cater for a growing student clientele. The university’s ranking for student satisfaction dipped slightly in 2014 but a recent survey placed the city among the top 10 locations in the UK for happiness. An active students’ union acts as a social hub.
